Strength from Adversity

Adversity is not to be feared, not to be defended against; but instead, adversity is to be expected, even welcomed, as we make room for growth. ~ Sandra Massey

Why the Hope Butterfly?

While exploring a small section of woods behind his home, a child found a caterpillar forming a cocoon. He was excited to find such a treasure and excitedly told himself “I will go out each morning to watch and see if the caterpillar becomes a butterfly. Each morning he would run to the cocoon and would sit for hours waiting for the butterfly to appear. On one of his visits he noticed a small opening in the cocoon. He was exhilarated. He sat and watched for what seemed like hours as the butterfly struggled and struggled to push its body though the tiny hole in the cocoon. The child watched on as the butterfly became tired. The butterfly stopped and rested. The child thought “The butterfly is so very tired. I will help him”. Triumphantly, the boy began to pick off pieces of the cocoon to widen the hole. The butterfly emerged easily, no longer struggling to release itself from the prison of the cocoon. Expecting the butterfly to emerge and spread its beautiful wings and fly away, the child was stunned to discover instead it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings and was not able to fly. The child looked on in disbelief realizing what he had done. He understood too late that the effort the butterfly expended to free itself from the prison of the cocoon actually provided the means of forcing the fluid from the butterfly’s swollen body into its wings. Only once this occurred would the butterfly be ready for flight from its cocoon.

Adversity builds us to be our strongest self in each phase of life. At times, we need someone to stand by us providing support. Not conquering the adversity for us, but instead allowing us to persevere in the struggle, until we achieve success. This strengthens us and builds character.  Without adversity we would not be as strong as what we could have been. Without adversity we would never fly.
